tenancy in common

definition of tenancy in common:

the ownership of real property by two or more persons, without the right of survivorship. That is, one co-owner may not take possession of another co-owner's share, upon that co-owner's death. Compare TENANCY IN COMMON to JOINT TENANCY, co-ownership of real property where each co-owner has the right of survivorship.
