a reduction or elimination of a beneficiary's legacy because of debts which must be paid from the decedent's estate before inheritance may happen.

abatement of a legacy, as it might be used:

Legacies to a spouse shall be abated only after the abatement of legacies to persons who are not related to the testator.

abatement of a legacy, in an example:

Fergus' favorite uncle, Angus, willed his nephew a thousand dollars. Unfortunately, Angus' estate was insolvent at the time of his death; therefore the legacy was abated and Fergus received nothing.
